“Bonkers week” for Paul Bastock – the man who broke Peter Shilton’s record of 1,249 career appearances

Nottingham Forest legend Peter Shilton’s world record of 1,249 career appearances has been broken.

Wisbech Town goalkeeper Paul Bastock was the man to do it in front of 286 fans as the United Counties League Premier Division side beat Thetford 4-1 in the FA Vase on Saturday.

Given Shilton’s status in the game, the 47-year-old’s exploits have attracted significant media attention.

The Boston United great admits he has experienced a “bonkers” week.

Forest legend Peter Shilton

“My Facebook and Twitter has gone crazy so I had to have a day off from it all today,” he told the Boston Standard.

“I feel like an X Factor contestant who came from nowhere and did alright and suddenly everyone wants to know them.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every minute of it – but I’d rather be Paul Bastock than Paul Gascoigne any day.

“It’s been bonkers all week.”
