Elliott Hewitt salvages a point for Notts County as they are held to a draw by Stevenage

Elliott Hewitt’s first goal of the season salvaged a valuable point for Notts County as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Stevenage.

The hosts had broken the deadlock in the 38th minute when Danny Newton steered into the far corner after Notts had failed to deal with a cross into the box.

But Notts were level just 14 minutes after the restart when a poor pass from Jack King was seized by Jorge Grant, who teed up Hewitt to produce a terrific finish.

Boss Kevin Nolan will have been happy with the second half response after his side found chances hard to come by in the opening 45 minutes.

Notts had actually started well enough, with Grant and Richard Duffy combining well to earn the visitors a corner, which came to nothing.

But gradually Stevenage, helped by the strong running of Matty Godden, began to exert their authority.

Tom Pett lashed over from 25 yards, before Newton clipped the top of the crossbar.

Jonathan Smith then had another try from distance but was off target as Notts desperately tried to maintain some attacking momentum.

Referee Ross Joyce was not aiding matters when he missed a crunching challenge on Terry Hawkridge which led to Harry Beautyman rolling a shot wide of the post.

With Notts incandescent, it was to get worse for the visitors when Newton fended off the attentions of Duffy to smash low into the far corner.

In response, Grant did have a free-kick from 20 yards which he did brilliantly to get over the wall, only for it to drop inches over the bar.

Nolan refrained from making any changes at half-time as Newton raced through only for Ross Fitzsimons to make a save at his near post.

Back came Notts through Hawkridge, whose deep cross was headed back into the danger area by Hewitt for Grant, who volleyed over.

The pair then combined again moments later with Grant clipping the bar with a superb volley from Hewitt’s excellent centre.

But it was Hewitt who eventually found the equaliser when receiving Grant’s pass, he opened his body up and bent a low finish into the far corner from just inside the box.

Notts’ tails were up and Ryan Yates was not far away from a winner when he struck a terrific effort just over the bar from 25 yards.

Nolan’s side pushed hard for a winner as Hawkridge saw a shot blocked, which was perhaps the closest the Magpies came to sealing all three points.
