If Shola Ameobi is fit, he has to play – Leigh Curtis picks his Notts County team to face Luton and you can too

Notts County head to Luton Town this weekend in what is undoubtedly the biggest game in League Two.

It pits the second-placed Magpies against the league leaders and it should be a tremendous battle between the pair.

But which team will Magpies boss Kevin Nolan field at Kenilworth Road? Leigh Curtis has chosen his XI, and so can you by using our widget below.

By and large the back four picks itself and given the way it has been playing as a unit of late, there is no need to change it.

Matt Tootle and Carl Dickinson have done excellent jobs over the last month, with the latter’s set-piece delivery certainly adding an extra dimension to the attack.

At centre-back, it has to be Shaun Brisley partnering Richard Duffy. Both are hugely reliable performers and you sense their experience is going to be key against a rampant Luton attack.

In midfield, I would opt for Terry Hawkridge on the right, with Jorge Grant obviously taking the left-sided spot which he has made his own this term and has delivered 14 goals in the process.

Jorge Grant (left) has been in the goals of late.

The centre of the pitch is an interesting decision. Ryan Yates is obviously a shoo-in given his recent form, but it’s who goes next to him that is the big question.

Elliott Hewitt provides boundless energy, but Rob Milsom gives you composure on the ball.
It’s an incredibly tough decision to make, but I think would just give the latter the edge.

Up front, if Shola Ameobi is fit then he has to play, given he gives centre-backs an absolute nightmare with his back to goal. He allows you to get up the pitch, which will be essential.

Jon Stead looked sharp against Oxford City and he scored a wonderful goal at Luton a couple of seasons back. Again, like Ameobi, he is an intelligent player who perhaps does not get the credit he deserves.

Leigh’s team (4-4-2): Fitzsimons; Tootle, Duffy, Brisley, Dickinson; Hawkridge, Yates, Milsom, Grant; Ameobi, Stead.

Don’t forget to pick your team and share yours.
