‘It would be great to see Notts County pull one of the big boys out of the hat in the FA Cup’, says Garry Birtles

Notts County begin their FA Cup campaign on Friday night when they tackle Bristol Rovers at Meadow Lane under the lights.

It will be an excellent test for Kevin Nolan’s team given they have designs themselves on competing in League One.

Rovers are a solid mid-table side so it will be intriguing to see how Notts deal with the task in hand.

It will give everybody a good idea of where they are at as a team and where they want to go.

Notts shouldn’t fear anything, however. They have an exceptional home record in which they are unbeaten in the league.

Notts County manager Kevin Nolan will be hoping for FA Cup glory.

They have made Meadow Lane a fortress and I can bet you now that Bristol Rovers will not be relishing facing Notts on their own patch.

I have to say I like what Kevin Nolan is doing and it’s great to see a young English manager with Premier League experience being given a chance in the lower levels.

He’s done an excellent job so far. He doesn’t over complicate things and I’ve been amazed at the transformation which has taken place at that club.

It would be great if Notts can go on a cup run, just as long as it doesn’t play havoc with where they are in the league.

But they have a good squad and look like they can cope with it.

The FA Cup is a wonderful competition, especially if you can get to the third round and pull one of the big boys out of the hat.
