All three former Nottingham Forest players could be missing for Ipswich

Two of Ipswich Town’s former Nottingham Forest players will not face their old club on Saturday – and a third one is fighting to be fit.

Luke Chambers – who almost returned to the City Ground last January, only for a transfer to collapse at the 11th hour – is suspended and David McGoldrick will be missing with a nasty groin injury.

Joe Garner has a chance of being involved against the Reds and is already such a key figure for Mick McCarthy’s side that he will almost certainly start if he can shake off a foot problem.

Garner has scored five goals for the Tractor Boys since signing in the summer – with fellow former Rangers man Martyn Waghorn having bagged nine. Both men played under Mark Warburton for the Glasgow club.

Chambers’ suspension does leave McCarthy with a defensive headache, with central defender Tommy Smith also struggling with a calf problem.

Adam Webster is the one out-and-out central defender Ipswich have fully fit, with full-back Jonas Knudsen likely to be pushed into a more central role, if Smith does not recover. Although another full-back, Jordan Spence, is also a potential option there.

McGoldrick will definitely miss the game after having surgery on a four-inch gash to his groin following a horror challenge from Sheffield Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens during their 2-2 draw just over a week ago.

The challenge, which saw Loovens rake his studs down McGoldrick’s groin, at waist height, went unpunished by referee Keith Stroud, but was described by boss McCarthy as “appalling” at the time.

“I think he will need surgery tomorrow and it’s an appalling challenge. He didn’t mean it, but if I sit here with a gun in my pocket and I kill you then I wouldn’t have meant it because I was just standing up,” said McCarthy following the game.

“I would still be punished for it. I’ve been in to see Keith (Stroud, referee) and I am the last person who wants to see people get yellow cards and red cards, but I’ve seen it again and it’s a red card. It’s a dreadful challenge and it should have been punished as such.”

Ipswich also have young midfielder Flynn Downes suspended, while Tom Adeyemi (hamstring), Luke Hyam (knee) and Andre Dozzell (knee) will also be missing.
