Banks to line up with Maradona and Cafu at World Cup draw


England’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks will be one of eight assistants at Friday’s 2018 World Cup draw.

The 79-year-old will line up with Diego Maradona, Laurent Blanc, Cafu, Carles Puyol, Diego Forlan, Nikita Simonyan and Fabio Cannavaro at the Kremlin.

Together with hosts Russia they represent all eight World Cup winning countries as they will be joined by Miroslav Klose from Germany, who will be the trophy bearer at the final draw ceremony.

Banks took time out from preparing for the draw to reveal how he believed Jack Butland is the best man to wear the No 1 jersey for the Three Lions next summer.

Named FIFA’s goalkeeper of the year six times, Banks will be one of the eight ‘assistants’ during Friday’s World Cup draw in Moscow – a famous former player from each of the seven nations to have won a World Cup, as well as one from the hosts.
