Jason McCarthy came up through the Southampton ranks

He was also determined not to wait around too long, playing for first Wycombe, then Walsall on loan and then this summer joining Barnsley, the club he calls ‘the Championship Southampton.’

McCarthy hopes to tread in the recent footsteps of Alfie Mawson, another player to progress at Oakwell, but whereas Mawson moved directly into the Premier League at Swansea, the 22-year-old McCarthy would like to get there with Barnsley.

This week he takes our Sky Bet EFL Q&A, opening up about his Liverpool-supporting boyhood, divulging his love for Pic ‘n’ Mix and cringing at the memory of an initiation song performance at Wycombe.

Were you always a full-back?

Yes, always a right-back. When I was growing up at Southampton’s academy I did play a little bit in centre midfield and then had a few games at centre-back for the youth team but I’ve always really been a right-back by trade. They like to have a look at you in a few positions in the academy at Southampton. That’s good and it benefits you because if you can play in numerous positions, it helps you get picked more because you’re more versatile and you…
