First Scotland call-up will give Nottingham Forest’s Jason Cummings major boost – Kenny Burns

Well done to Jason Cummings.

It’s great to see him get his first ever call-up to the senior Scotland squad.

I’m sure it will give him a major boost going into Forest’s two Championship matches, against Reading and QPR, before he reports for duty for his country during the international break.

And if he goes away and does well for Scotland when they play against Holland in a friendly, he will come back to the City Ground with even more confidence – and he already looks a very confident lad.

We’ve already seen the difference it has made to players like Joe Worrall and Ben Brereton.

Both of those players have gone away with England, done well and returned to Forest better, more experienced, players, with more self-belief.

I actually don’t think we’ve seen the best of Cummings in a Forest shirt yet.

Signed from Hibs in the summer, he arrived with a prolific strike-rate in front of goal in Scotland. He’s scored four goals in 13 games for the Reds so far this season, which isn’t a bad return, but I think there’s more to come from him once he’s properly adapted to playing in the Championship.

But we’ve already seen with the goals he’s scored he’s a good finisher, and he’s a lively hardworking player too.

I think someone like him might be what Scotland need right now, after missing out qualifying for the World Cup.

He’s good, young and hungry, which is exactly the type of player they need to be looking at as they try to qualify for the next major tournament, the European Championships.

And he’s also a lively character, and the Scotland squad will be at a low ebb right now.

He doesn’t strike me as the type of person who will be fazed by walking into the Scotland dressing room.

So I don’t think he would be fazed if he got his big chance against Holland. Good luck to him.
