‘Football needs more players with the attitude of Nottingham Forest skipper Chris Cohen’ – Garry Birtles

Hopefully Chris Cohen is able to take the next step in his recovery soon, with Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton saying he is close to being able to run on an anti-gravity machine.

You don’t want to see anyone have the injury record he’s had, but he’s a fabulous character and a true professional. You’ve got to admire his determination. I wish there were more players like him, with that attitude.

Even when he’s not playing he’s good to have around the place, he’ll still have an influence in the dressing room, I’m sure. He’s someone for the younger players to look up to.

And he’s got that belief that he’s going to get fit again.

The facilities available to injured players are much better nowadays, so the recovery period can be quicker than it was when I was playing.

Chris will know his own body.

My body told me at 36 that it was time to call it a day. You know when it’s time. Chris clearly thinks his isn’t yet.

And why not keep going if he can. I’d say to any footballer, don’t retire too early. You are a long time out of the game.

Playing football is a privilege, you have to embrace it for as long as you can. It annoys me when players don’t do that. You only get one chance at it, you have to go for it.
