Former Nottingham Forest flop Joao Teixeira says he should have ended Championship loan spell sooner

Former Nottingham Forest flop Joao Teixeira says he should have ended his loan spell in the Championship sooner.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Reds on loan from Benfica in January but failed to make a single first-team appearance before returning to his parent club early, before the final game of last season.

It was Teixeira’s second loan spell of the 2016/17 campaign, having spent the first half of it with Wolves, where he featured 20 times.

But the 23-year-old says he does not regret making the move to the UK and has not ruled out coming back in the future.

Asked if he regrets his time with Wanderers and at the City Ground, Teixeira told newspaper A Bola: “No. Maybe in the middle of last year, I should have left… but it’s past.

“I had the opportunity to have other experiences, completely different realities.

“It was my decision at the time and I enjoyed the experience. But returning was the best option. I needed to play.”

Teixeira is now on loan at Portuguese side Vitoria de Setubal and has made six appearances so far this season. He adds a return to the UK one day remains a possibility.

“It’s something I wouldn’t mind. I liked being there,” he said. “It is in fact a different world. We never know the future. All my strength lies in helping Vitoria.”
