‘It could have been five, six or seven!’ – Kevin Nolan gives his verdict as Notts County storm back to the top

Kevin Nolan was thrilled with his ruthless Notts County after they stormed back to the top of League Two with a convincing win over 10-man Newport.

Jorge Grant gave the Magpies the lead with a cool finish just three minutes after Dan Butler had been dismissed for striking Matt Tootle.

Shola Ameobi then made it 2-0 after the break when he latched onto a Grant cross to put the Magpies firmly in the driving seat.

Grant then made it 3-0 in the 55th minute when he nodded over the line after his original header from Matt Tootle’s cross was parried out by Joe Day.

Further chances came and went for Notts, with Grant hitting the bar with a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards late on.

With Luton Town losing at home to Coventry City, Notts moved back to the summit by a point, and Magpies boss Nolan was thrilled with what he witnessed.

“I was delighted with the performance and we were like our old selves again,” he said.

“It was what we were producing when we were at the top of the league the last time.

“It was high tempo and we dictated the play from start to finish.

“We really made it difficult for Newport and I was delighted with the goals we scored and the clean sheet too.

“It could have been five, six or seven given the chances we created and I don’t think that would have flattered them.

“Before the sending off there was a bit of anxiety, but I always felt we were in control but perhaps tried to force things a bit too much at times.

“But we started to settle and then the sending off came. But just because they have a man sent off it doesn’t give you an automatic right to win the game.

“You have to earn it. We did that and we made them pay the price for being down to 10 men.”
