‘It was a real team effort’ – Kevin Nolan on win that put Notts County back on top of League Two

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan hailed a “real team effort” after his side marched back to the top of the League Two table.

The Magpies secured a convincing 3-0 win against 10-man Newport to move a point clear at the summit.

After Dan Butler was sent off for leading with an arm on Matt Tootle in the 33rd minute, Jorge Grant made them pay immediately with a classy finish.

He then turned creator for Shola Ameobi early in the second half before grabbing his second – and 10th goal of the campaign – with a close-range header.

With Luton Town losing at home to Coventry City, Notts are now leading the division again, and boss Nolan was thrilled with his players.

“I’m delighted with the clean sheet and the goals we scored,” said Nolan. “It could have been six or seven with the chances we created and it wouldn’t have flattered us.

“We were back to being solid and ruthless out of possession. They had lots of threats and even when they were down to 10 men, their long throw is a weapon.

“We knew we had to stand up and be counted and the lads did that. It was a real team effort.”
