‘Joe Worrall can go as far as he wants – it’s great to see him commit to doing it with Nottingham Forest’ – Garry Birtles

There will be no wiping that big smile off Joe Worrall’s face after he signed a new contract for Nottingham Forest . You can tell how much the club means to him.

Good for him. You have to earn those contracts, they’re not given out willy-nilly so he’s obviously impressed.

He’s a promising young talent and hopefully he can progress even more in the next few years. It’s great to see the club looking to keep hold of young players like him, that’s so important.

How far can he go? As far as he wants to. It’s all down to him.

The one piece of guidance I would give him is, listen to other people, take every piece of advice on board – you don’t always have to follow it, and sometimes you have to do what’s right for you, but never stop listening.

Talk to your team-mates, learn from them. And talk to your coaches, soak up everything you can. Don’t think that you’re the finished article.

Joe can be anything he wants to be if he’s dedicated enough and is prepared to work hard. It certainly seems like he is. He seems like he’s got a good head on his shoulders and has a good attitude.

He’ll have benefitted from the experience he’s gained already – with England Under-21s , at the Toulon Tournament in the summer and having worn the captain’s armband for Forest earlier this season.

He’s shown he’s not afraid to speak out, either. I like that. No wonder he’s been talked about as a future Forest captain on a more permanent basis.

It’s good to have players like Joe in the team; players who know what the club means to the fans.

Off the pitch, Forest are doing a good job of engaging with the community now – connecting with people and making former players feel more welcome, getting them involved.

That’s really good to see. It brings everyone together, it unites everyone and it gets supporters on side.

Having someone like Joe Worrall in the squad – and committing his future to the club – only adds to that.
