Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Oxford City may come too soon for Notts County’s injured strike duo Jon Stead and Shola Ameobi, with the influential pair rated as doubtful for the second round tie with non-league Oxford City.
Stead missed last Saturday’s dramatic late win over Colchester after taking a heavy knock to his thigh in the draw at Yeovil, while Ameobi has picked up a groin problem which could rule him out of the televised Meadow Lane tie, with Notts possibly having one eye on next weekend’s top of the table battle at Luton.
“Steady is slowly but surely recovering, we’re hoping that we might have a chance of him in the next 48 hours,” said boss Kevin Nolan.
“Shola’s the same – he’s been carrying a bit of a problem in his groin, so they’re going to be assessed late on.
“They’re very doubtful to be quite honest. But apart from that I think I’ve got a clean bill of health going into this part of the season, only having Shola, who’s got a slight strain of his groin, and Steady, it just can’t be helped – it’s just a contact injury.”
Nolan praised the work of his medical team at Meadow Lane, as he prepares to head into the crucial Christmas period which sees Notts play seven times between Saturday and New Year’s Day.
“To be at this stage of the season, going in with the full squad fit, it’s an absolute testament to all the work all my staff behind the scenes have been doing,” he added.
