Kevin Nolan expects ‘brilliant’ Alan Smith to score more goals for Notts County

Kevin Nolan was full of praise for former Manchester United star Alan Smith after he bagged his first senior goal for Notts County.

The former Leeds United ace scored in the first half of the 2-1 defeat to Mansfield Town in the Checkatrade Trophy Northern Group G clash with a close-range effort.

It capped off what was an impressive performance from the former Newcastle United veteran who had an excellent game up front alongside Callum Saunders.

And boss Nolan is hoping it won’t be the last time the 36-year-old is on the scoresheet this season.

“I thought Smudger was great and you are going to get that from him every time he plays,” he said.

Alan Smith is congratulated on his goal

“He loves the game and still has that hunger, but unfortunately his legs don’t let him get to 90 minutes as much as he would like them to do.

“But he was brilliant and took his goal really well. That’s what you expect when you put him up there because he’s done it all his career.

“I’ve told him he will be a forward and I am expecting him to come up with a couple of goals here and there.”
