According to the reports, Liverpool have emerged as favourites to re-sign Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano.
Reports surfaced last week suggested that the Merseyside club were interested in handing Mascherano the chance to return to Anfield, as he having lost his place in the Barcelona starting lineup.
The 33-year-old’s current deal at Camp Nou expires in summer of 2019, but Catalan giants are understood to be willing to allow him to leave on a free transfer in order to ease their wage bill.
The publication reports that Barcelona’s superstar and Mascherano’s teammate Lionel Messi “is convinced that the midfielder already made his mind up to go” and that he will keen a move in summer of 2019, with the La Liga giants reportedly prepared to let him leave on a free to cut out his healthy wages.
The Argentine reportedly initially rejected a return to Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side have now been made favourites to sign him with a deal seemingly back on the table.
The Merseyside outfit could face competition from the European giant’s likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, though, while Mascherano has also been linked with a return to River Plate, where he began his professional career.
Javier Mascherano joined Liverpool in January of 2007. He has played in 139 matches and scored two goals for the Merseyside club.
