Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton will not confirm if Everton can recall Kieran Dowell

Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton has refused to confirm if Kieran Dowell can be recalled by Everton in January.

The 20-year-old has made an impressive start to his season-long loan at the City Ground with five goals in 17 games, including a hat-trick in Saturday’s 3-2 win against Hull City.

Everton’s struggles in the Premier League inevitably give rise to concerns they could turn to Dowell to help revitalise their fortunes in the new year.

Warburton would not address the possibility of him going back to Goodison Park ahead of schedule, but he is adamant both clubs, as well as the player, are benefiting from the current situation.

“You never reveal the terms of a deal. The fact of the matter is Premier League clubs send out the best young talent to gain vital experience,” he said.

“No disrespect to the Under-23s leagues, they don’t compare to first team football at this level.

“On Saturday straight after we played there was an Under-23 game on. It was chalk and cheese.

“The experience Kieran gains playing at a club like Forest with the standing that it has and the demands of playing at this level will be wonderful for him.

“Everything is geared towards his overall development. Premier League clubs have to get the right loan for the right player.

“We had Alex Pritchard at Brentford. He went back to Spurs a better player and I think he was sold for £9m or £10m.

“It works for all parties. Everyone is benefiting from Kieran’s loan.”

Everton turning to Dowell to help turn their season around would be a major ask of the England Under-20 international.

The Toffees already have plenty of senior options in the number 10 role, including Wayne Rooney, Davy Klaasen, and £50m signing Gylfi Sigurdsson, while Ross Barkley is out injured.

Warburton says that at present, Forest fans should enjoy having Dowell in their squad.

The Under-20 World Cup winner has featured in every game this season, starting 14 of them after getting his first taste of senior football.

“Kieran Dowell is an Everton player on loan at Nottingham Forest. It’s great to say ‘keep him and do this’ but he’s an Everton player,” he said.

“We’re delighted to have him. I think he’s enjoying the move and Everton are benefiting from the experience he’s gaining.

“Don’t lose sight of the fact that he’s an Everton player. As long as all parties benefit then the loan is fantastic for everyone concerned.”
