Nottingham Rugby up to third in the Championship after win over Richmond


Nottingham Rugby are up to third in the Championship after a 34-17 win against Richmond at Lady Bay on Friday night.

Ian Costello’s side have played a game more than their rivals, but a third win in a row has lifted them into the upper echelons.

The Green and Whites took the lead in the sixth minute when scrum-half Darryl Veenendaal made space for himself with a dummy for an early try.

Tiff Eden kicked the conversion to make it 7-0 to the hosts.

The sides had exchanged one successful penalty each by the 12 minute to make it 10-3.

Richmond fought back to level in the 18th minute when they spun the ball wide for Jordan Simpson-Heft to score a converted try.

Oli Evans showed tremendous place to restore the lead with a try for Nottingham in the 24th minute. The conversion was successful to make it 17-10.

Luc Jones dotted down for Richmond soon after though and with extras added it was once again all square.

Nottingham would take a 22-17 lead into the break though when Joe Cobden scored his 12 try for the club in the 38th minute.

Eden missed the conversion and then a penalty in additional time before the interval.

The hosts dominated the second half as they kept Richmond out for 40 minutes.

They scored their next try in the 43 minute through Ben Buxton from close range. The conversion was successful.

Cobden set up a tremendous try with eight minutes to go as he sprinted 40m before the ball found Billy Robinson to touch down.

Nottingham picked up the bonus point after scoring five tries.
