Shanghai Greenland Shenhua frontman Obafemi Martins could gatecrash Nigeria’s squad for the World Cup 2018 in Russia according to coach of the team Gernot Rohr.
The coach made this known during a radio interview monitored by Owngoalnigeria.com editorial team, when he was asked about the chances of the forward making the squad for the World Cup.
” We will call the best men, for now everybody wants to come because we are in the World Cup. The players who brought us to the World Cup, I don’t forget them. It’s very important “, Rohr said.
” There are other players we are also looking at calling to beef up the team, but for now we are looking at getting good games for better preparations for the World Cup “.
Martins was part of the Nigerian team to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which happens to be the only World Cup the recently turned 33 year old has played in his career.
He came to limelight during his time with Italian side Inter-Milan, but he has since gone on to play for teams like Newcastle United, Wolfsburg, Rubin Kazan, Levante and MLS side Seattle Sounders from where he moved to China.
Presently he has scored 8 goals, and also has three assists for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, where he is partner to Argentina forward Carlos Tevez in attack.
