‘When Jorge Grant is in this kind of mood for Notts County he is so hard to stop’ – Leigh Curtis

1. Kevin Nolan shows great faith in Ryan Yates

Considering he is only 19 years old, the faith that Nolan puts in Ryan Yates is clear for all to see.

Sometimes young players only play here and there, but Nolan has complete trust in the on-loan Nottingham Forest teenager.

He has been rewarded with some excellent displays and the old adage that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough rings true here.

Yates has been exceptional and Nolan has given him an environment in which he is clearly thriving in. He was excellent against Newport.

2. Two clubs on the rise

On the last day of last season, Newport County avoided relegation by beating Notts County 2-1 at Rodney Parade.

Notts themselves had a brush with the bottom two until Kevin Nolan came in and guided them to a mid-table finish.

All of a sudden both clubs find themselves at the top end of League Two in what has been a remarkable tale of resurgence at both clubs.

Should they both win promotion it will be a hell of a story considering the travails they both experienced last term.

3. Jorge Grant played his way back into form

Grant is the club’s leading scorer and had been experiencing a lean spell given how he started the season.

But all players will go through peaks and troughs throughout the course of the season, the important thing where Grant was concerned is that he never lost confidence in his own ability.

As long as you keep putting the work in, the goals will come again – and they did just that with two against Newport.

When he’s in this kind of mood he is so hard to stop.

4. The left-back battle is great

There’s a good argument to suggest that the strongest position in the squad is left-back, with Carl Dickinson and Dan Jones battling for the number one spot.

Both players have been impressive this season with Dickinson currently in a great run of form which is the best of his Notts career so far.

With Jones back from injury it was intriguing to see who would get the nod and it was Dickinson who remained in the team against Newport.

But given how good both players are, whoever starts the game isn’t going to weaken the side.

5. Poppy Appeal is such a worthwhile cause

Notts have linked up with the Royal British Legion to launch a poppy appeal.

The Last Post sounded out before kick-off and it made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

If you can donate, and buy a poppy, it’s for such a worthwhile cause.
